“My hormones are messed up.”
Often an initial claim in today’s world with those struggling to stop eating, eh, shit it meant so say “lose fat”…
Multiple dieting cycles can indeed create metabolic dysregulation, or adaptation (not damage), making it more challenging to lose fat than usual.
HOWEVER – 9/10 times, the individual is merely underestimating one’s intake.
The average person underestimates their caloric intake by 50%, and overestimates their activity by 50%!
Now that we have that shit out of the way………..
In this post, I’m going to break down the different hormonal effects that can be caused by “weight loss”.
EFFECTS OF WEIGHT LOSS ON HORMONES:
⬇️Reduced thyroid – leading to reduced metabolic rate.
⬇️ Reduced leptin – reduced metabolic rate, increased hunger, can affect other hormones.
⬆️ Increased ghrelin – increased hunger signaling.
⬇️ Lowered insulin – increased hunger, can cause a decrease in muscle retention (LBM).
⬇️ Decreased testosterone – Threatens muscle mass retention, possible reproductive side effects in dudes.
⬆️ Increased cortisol – Lowers leptin receptor sensitivity, water retention, effects hunger, and can cause a catabolic environment leading to less muscle mass retention.
Now… how can we avoid this?
Well, for starters….
IF you go into a fat loss phase or plan to diet, understand that the more extreme approach you take (i.e., looking to lose as much weight as possible, in as short of time as possible), the more exposed you are to issues.
Do not fall into the following marketing bullshit.
❌ Buy into anyone who claims to have the “secret science.”
Science is science. It’s not a secret.
❌ Brags about past client lost an extreme amount of weight, in a short period.
You will be left fucked….. with no understanding of how to sustain a healthy weight, and with a high propensity to regain everything you lose + some.
❌ Anything that is a “discounted weight loss plan.”
You get what you pay for.
If you’ll pay full price for a Starbucks mochafrapafucko every day…
You are spending multiple thousands of dollars throughout a year.
However, when it comes to your health, all you care about is “what is the cheapest?”
You’re going to receive a cookie-cutter, bullshit “plan” which will pray on your insecurities and impulse, and leave you to lose 15lbs, only to gain back 20 because you had no strategy to keep the weight off.
You will also be more likely to experience the hormonal shifts mentioned above because the “plan” was not tailored to you, nor by someone who knows what the fuck they are doing.
Remember, if you want to pull body fat off- “Smarter is Harder”.
Work with someone who prioritizes sustainability and science.
Not extreme results, and discounts.
The secret is that there is no secret. Now get to work.
