The real reason you aren’t making progress in your physique (hint: it’s NOT what you think).
(Side note, this can apply to all set goals, but we’re speaking specifically to looking better naked).
I’ll start with what the issue ISN’T.
Macronutrient ratios (no bro, the reason you aren’t lean isn’t that your carbs are too high, its because you don’t have any fucking discipline).
- Supplement strategies.
- Too much/ too little cardio.
- Time/ schedule/ unsuportive surroundings.
- Your job, girlfriend, that bad knee…
I’m going to tell you the big secret now, and it’s going to shock you…
Are you ready?
It’s YOU, and your compulsive, “all or nothing” behaviors.
I’ve seen it time and time again. A new client comes in, so incredibly hyped to “finally make this happen.”
Their eagerness and enthusiasm are insane, to the point that I wonder if they have any other activities or responsibilities in life, aside from just their physique goals.
I learn that they’ve cut out all friends and social situations, and have every detail narrowed down to a T, which includes eating the same shit day in, and day out.
Neuroticism is probably essential to a degree if you want to be the best in the world and compete at the Olympia for example.
Otherwise, it’s doing you a massive disservice and will result in a lack of long term progression.
This “all or nothing” approach.
Rather than understanding how LONG this is going to take, being objective within that realization, and showing up every day.
How not to think: “Oh, I missed my supplements this morning and forgot to get meal two in, and I missed a training session, my week is fucked! I’m going to get a burger and start again next week”.
The difference in photos is two years.
That’s two years of around 80% adherence.
Around 5-8lbs of muscle gained. Could I have learned more? Probably, but I know my limitations from a lifestyle perspective.
I missed a few workouts, I missed a few meals, but I kept showing up, without getting discouraged.
No “throwing the baby out with the bathwater.”
I have around 15 years of training under my belt.
I have never missed more than a week from training, aside from injuries.
I’ve missed days and meals, not weeks or months.
Stop going hardcore for three months at a time, then reverting to doing nothing for five, only to repeat the vicious cycle.
Find an approach you can sustain, and stick to LONG TERM. Like, forever.
There are no shortcuts to this shit.
I’ll leave you with a quote from Shelby Starnes.
“Give me the bodybuilder who’s 80% adherent for five years, over the one whos 100% and burned out after 1-year any day”.
