How to get away with a bit of drinking

If you’re anything like me, you love the fitness lifestyle and will always workout. But you also like to relax and have your fair share of fun.

You may be wondering, “do these go together? Is it really possible to do both?” Of course, it is. You just have to know what you’re doing.

How to handle booze – your step by step guide.

The best way to control your calorie intake is to simply reduce the food amount to align with the alcohol your drinking.

Here is a useful tool to remember the calorie content of alcohol.

These are broken up into 1 unit (shot, bottle, or glass).

Beer: 150kcal/ 12g carb.

White Wine: 200kcal/ 7g carb.

Red wine: 210kcal/ 9g carb.

Shot: 80kcal/ – estimated depending on type.

You can also use calorieking.com to look up specifics per type/ brand of drink.

Remember; 1g of carbs and protein contain 4kcal, and 1g of fat contains 9kcal.

So, if we’re having three beers, we’ll take the total calorie content (600kcal), and we’ll consider taking out around 75g carb (300kcal), and 33g fat (297kcal).

“What if I want to have like 15 beers?”… I feel you…

This is where your goals have to meet your expectations.

If you’re doing this, you have to be ok with a reduced amount of progress.

See, when we have booze in the body, it takes priority as our main fuel source.

This is because a by-product of alcohol is acetate, which is toxic.

So our body will stop any muscle building, or fat burning processes to deal with the toxin first.

It won’t begin normal function, until it has burnt off these calories from alcohol.

When it’s all said and done, just make sure you’re comfortable with your decision, and try not to beat yourself up over it. Remember, this is a lifestyle. Fitness is supposed to add to your life, not take from it.

Don’t freak out over having some drinks with your friends every once in a while. As long as you have a lot more “good days” than “bad days”, you will be just fine. Similar to a cheat day. Cheat days are okay because you don’t have them 4x a week. A diet that is 90% on point is still a pretty damn good diet.

Do not punish yourself with excess cardio, and not eating for several days to balance out your calorie intake after drinking.

Side tip: load up on N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) before and after going out. I like to take around 500mg.

Booze depletes glutathione, a vital antioxidant in the body, which is a coenzyme in oxidation-reduction reactions in cells.

(This is not proven, just anecdotal, but I believe it helps support your bodies detox efforts).

Another supplement that I have found useful to take before and after going out is milk thistle. Just like NAC, milk thistle has also been known to have great benefits when it comes to the liver.

Last but not least, don’t forget the basics. You know, the ones you’ve heard about since you started drinking in high school but have never actually followed all that well. These include a well-balanced meal before going out, staying hydrated, and one of the most important ones. Sticking to one type of alcohol.

Remember, this should not be an every day or even every weekend thing if you are serious about your goals. But to never take a break isn’t necessarily healthy either. After all, we work our asses off, so let’s reward ourselves.
